Recently I had a few friends drop by unexpectedly.    I was a bit very frazzled by the surprise, yet was obviously happy to have friends over for a visit!  Of course it was one of those week’s where I had been out of town and had a completely bare refrigerator and cabinet and had been putting off going to the market.  I felt terrible that I had nothing in my house to offer, and told myself that I would never let this happen again.  I decided there were certain necessities I needed to have in my home at all times so that no matter when I have a visitor or two, I will always be prepared.  Here are my how to entertain last minute guests necessities…

how to entertain last minute guests

1. Always have a bottle of wine or champagne in the refrigerator.   This is an easy thing to keep on hand and a total necessity.  That way when a guest or two randomly stops by you have something to sip already in the fridge.

2. Have easy snacks on hand, like the makings for a cheese plate, some grapes, olives, and/or a selection of nuts.   I love a good cheese plate any day of the week and they are so easy to put together.  I usually try and keep at least one soft cheese like a triple cream and one hard cheese like manchego in my home.  When putting together a cheese plate I love playing around with the looks of it by throwing on a few grapes, nuts, and olives to add a bit of color.  I also love a bit of honey with a soft cheese so sometimes I will throw that in the mix as well.  I also love a good cracker.  I try and keep some of those rosemary raisin crisps from Trader Joes in my pantry and they are literally addicting.

3. Always have your home somewhat organized.  Ok so I am not going to pretend like my house is perfectly organized, but I always try to keep it somewhat put together.  Either way, I always keep it so that if someone were to stop by unannounced, I could go into tailspin mode and get everything in presentable condition in about ten minutes.   how to entertain last minute guests

4. Keep a few candles on hand to light and create a nice ambience.  It is amazing how lighting a few candles can really create a nice ambience in a room, not to mention a pretty scent.  I love lighting a few candles every night in general, simply because they put me in a good mood and I love how pretty the lighting is once it is dark out.
